In WTOP’s article, “Smarter classrooms, real results: How AI is rewriting the rules of education”, Charles Harry, director of the Center for Governance of Technology and Systems (GoTech) and associate research professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy, explores the growing impact of artificial intelligence in education. Drawing on two decades of government experience and his work in academia, Harry highlights AI’s potential to personalize learning, provide real-time student support, and save educators valuable time.

Harry, who also teaches within the College of Information (INFO), said he embraces AI in his classroom while emphasizing thoughtful and ethical use. He notes that AI helps students without coding backgrounds tackle complex data analysis and visualization within weeks, creating more engaging and accessible learning experiences. While Harry sees AI as a “huge net positive,” he acknowledges ongoing concerns around cheating and data privacy, encouraging responsible integration and critical thinking. He believes AI’s influence on education will surpass that of the internet, fundamentally reshaping how students and instructors teach, learn, and create.
