UMD iSchool Faculty Members Named 2018 ACM Distinguished Members

Jennifer Golbeck, professor at the University of Maryland College of Information Studies (UMD iSchool) and director of the social intelligence lab, and Niklas Elmqvist, associate professor in the UMD iSchool, were both elevated to 2018 ACM Distinguished Members and recognized for their contributions that have revolutionized how we live, work and play. Golbeck and Elmqvist were 2 of only 49 people selected in the world to receive the honorable ACM award this year. The Distinguished Members Grade recognizes those ACM members with at least 15 years of professional experience and 5 years on continuous Professional Membership who have achieved significant accomplishments or have made a significant impact on the computing field.

“By honoring these individuals, we highlight the professional achievements behind the technologies that have transformed both our daily lives and society in general,” said Cherri M. Pancake, ACM president. “Each Distinguished Member has also demonstrated a commitment to being part of the professional community through his or her longstanding membership in ACM. These computing leaders really epitomize ACM’s mission of ‘advancing computing as a science and a profession.'”
