In NC State University’s Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS) latest announcement, “LAS Announces 2025 Collaborators,” researchers are advancing national security and intelligence analysis through collaborative projects with academic and industry partners. This year, 17 faculty from 11 universities—including Cody Buntain from the University of Maryland’s College of Information—and three companies were selected to conduct year-long research funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. LAS’s 2025 projects focus on human-machine teaming, content triage, and operationalizing machine learning, exploring applications such as video object detection, technical intelligence support, text and audio summaries, and edge deployment of AI tools.

Buntain and his collaborators are contributing expertise in these areas, demonstrating how academic research can extend beyond intelligence-specific challenges to broader technological applications. Importantly, LAS emphasizes that while these projects leverage advanced AI and analytics, hands-on collaboration between faculty, industry, and students remains central to innovation.
