Research on participatory sensing, the practice of using human participants to gather data on their mobile devices from their environment that can be shared.

Medium article, “Engaging the Commons in Participatory Sensing” by University of Maryland College of Information Studies (UMD iSchool) PhD student Yongle Zhang describes a research study on participatory sensing, the practice of using human participants to gather data on their mobile devices from their environment that can be shared.

This study was conducted by a research team from the Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL) including UMD iSchool Assistant Professor Ge Gao, Yuling Sun, and Yongle Zhang. The team sought to understand the needs and motivations of human participants in participatory sensing projects. To answer this question, the team looked at, “the status monitoring of shared dockless bikes in urban China.”

The team found 4 different models of user engagement in participatory sensing.
