Faculty Spotlight: Margaret Chmiel, Adjunct Lecturer
Dr. Margaret Chmiel brings her award-winning expertise in research and media to the forefront of her role as an iSchool adjunct faculty member. Now in her fifth semester as a lecturer at the iSchool, she is teaching the Introduction to Research course. She thrives on empowering graduate students to become confident producers and consumers of scholarly research in applied social sciences. Margaret has spent over 20 years researching how to structure active learning classrooms as a leading learning mechanism. Additionally, Margaret is the Director of Evaluation for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the largest private funder of science education. She is an avid traveler whose most recent adventure took her and her husband to Patagonia where they hiked the W trail in the Torres del Paine National Park located in Chile. While in Chile, Maragaret documented the street art and graffiti that has emerged as part of the ongoing political protests there. She is also producing a short documentary about the Small Press Expo, an independent publishers conference that has been happening in Bethesda Maryland for 25 years. The conference fosters an amazing diversity of stories that presage current pop culture, so documenting this work is a dream come true.
