The Digital Privacy News article, “Ease of Voice Recognition Technology Brings Great Risks” by Brittany VanDerBill, explores the privacy risks associated with voice recognition technology. While this technology creates an additional convenience for users, it poses a threat to their privacy.
Associate Professor at the University of Maryland College of Information Studies (UMD iSchool), Jessica Vitak, tells VanDerBill that “there are a few privacy concerns that are either specific to voice recognition technology or amplified by it.”
Smartphones may be recording users without them realizing it. Dr. Vitak shares that, “there is some ambiguity regarding when these devices are listening, how much data they collect and store, and how that data could be used.”
