The University of Maryland (UMD) College of Information Studies is deeply grateful for the generous $25,000 commitment of John Glaab to establish the Christine Glaab Law Librarian Fellowship. This fund, founded in honor of his late wife Christine Glaab, will provide significant and invaluable financial support to one Master of Information and Library Science (MLIS) student annually who specializes in Legal Informatics. This fellowship carries on Christine’s lifelong passion for law librarianship.

Christine received a bachelor’s degree in sociology, followed by a Master of Library Science from the UMD College of Information Studies in 1975. Christine combined her loves of policy, law, and librarianship throughout her career. She played a significant role as law librarian at three prominent Washington, D.C. law firms: Morgan Lewis & Bockius, Fulbright & Jaworski, and Kaye Scholer. She then went on to become head librarian for the U.S. Government Surface Transportation Board.

Christine’s enthusiasm for librarianship and access to information extended beyond her career as well. She was a regular volunteer for the Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Libraries and frequently provided books and supplies to the Greenbank Middle School in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Over a 20-year period, she provided thousands of books to the county library system and middle school.

In memory of Christine’s passion for libraries, reading, and education, as well as her dedicated service to the field of law librarianship, the Christine Glaab Law Librarian Fellowship is established to encourage future professionals to enter this field and assist them in pursuit of their MLIS degree at the UMD College of Information Studies, specializing in Legal Informatics. Recipients will have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in law librarianship, serving as an information professional for a law firm, law school or court, or serving in the legal or judicial operations of a state or U.S. Government agency.

The first recipient of this fellowship, Cassidy Woodside, starts the MLIS program and Legal Informatics specialization in Spring 2019. Cassidy embodies the core values of the Christine Glaab Law Librarian Fellowship with her passion to become an information analyst and law librarian for the U.S. Government. Cassidy has already demonstrated exceptional dedication to her education, earning her Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees while serving in the U.S. military. The UMD College of Information Studies is appreciative of the Christine Glaab Law Librarian Fellowship fund that will support Cassidy’s – and future students’ – educations.
