Technology is becoming part of the story regarding how marginalized populations in the U.S.
In Brookings article, “Where would racial progress in policing be without camera phones?” by University of Maryland College of Information Studies (UMD iSchool) Adjunct Professor Nicol Turner Lee, she explains the role camera phones are playing in exposing police brutality against African Americans.
Lee shares that, “In today’s world, virtually anyone can be a videographer and filmmaker. The combination of smart phones, video recording apps, and social media platforms have generated a revolution in public empowerment.”
Video recordings of police brutality allow people to see injustice and violence for themselves, and “technology is becoming part of the story regarding how marginalized populations in the U.S. and across the world are recording injustice and thereby, gaining personal empowerment.”
