In AIP’s article “Guarding the History of Science: Jamila Hinds at the Niels Bohr Library & Archives,” MLIS student Jamila Hinds reflects on her field study experience preserving the legacy of Inside Science, AIP’s former nonprofit news service. As part of her graduate program at the University of Maryland’s College of Information (INFO), Hinds assessed nearly 300 fragile Betacam tapes documenting decades of scientific discovery – materials that were at risk of being lost to time.

Her work involved cataloging and preserving rare audiovisual footage, updating finding aids, and improving digital tools to make the collection more accessible to researchers and the public. Through this hands-on experience, Hinds not only protected invaluable records of science’s past but also gained insight into the collaborative nature of archival work and the vital role libraries play in safeguarding and sharing knowledge.
