Superpowered Data Analytics: Preparing Students for Data of the Future with Dr. Jesse Klein

Research Talks/Events

Date/Time: Wednesday, March 30, 2022 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Location: Hornbake 2119 and Zoom

As part of our spring talk series, please join us on Monday, March 30, for a talk from Jesse Klein. The talk will be held in Hornbake 2119 and on Zoom.

Abstract:

The emphasis on data-driven storytelling and decision-making has shaped the landscape for the future of data science and data analytics. Beyond wading through the data deluge, we now have the tools, opportunity, and motivation to seek, link, and interpret data for understanding every aspect of our lives. While exciting, the future of data analytics demands interconnectivity of skills, subject expertise, and socio-technical context to derive meaningful, ethical, and relevant insights for high-impact solutions. In this talk, I explore ways to teach various aspects of data analytics through the engaging topics of gaming, popular culture, and social media. In conclusion, I propose innovative directions for the development of a new masters-level program in data science at UMD’s iSchool.
