MIT Hacking Racism Challenge in Healthcare

Date/Time: Friday, October 16, 2020 12:00 am - Sunday, October 18, 2020 - 11:59 pm

MIT Hacking Racism in Healthcare Challenge, a virtual hackathon. In this 48-hour virtual event, we will identify and tackle systemic health inequities that impact underrepresented and vulnerable racial groups.

Systemic health inequities have persisted throughout our American history. These inequities continue to impact many underrepresented and vulnerable racial groups. Historically, this population has been denied appropriate and equitable healthcare access. The pandemic has exacerbated these existing health disparities. Current demonstrations against racial injustice have recast the spotlight on these inequalities. These recent events underscore the urgency for action to address the role that systemic racism plays in health disparities.

During this event, we will bring together key stakeholders, including patients, clinicians, engineers, data scientists, programmers, artists/designers, and public health professionals to form diverse teams.

Participants of any background with a passion for healthcare equity are welcome!

5 reasons MIT Virtual Hackathon is different from other hackathons

  1. NO NEED TO CODE
  2. HIGHLY INTERDISCIPLINARY and MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMS – patients, clinicians, engineers, data scientists, programmers, artists/designers, and public health professionals to form diverse teams.
  3. PROBLEM CENTERED APPROACH TO MEET REAL END-USER NEEDS
  4. VIABILITY AND FEASIBILITY IS CRUCIAL
  5. POST-HACKATHON SUPPORT – building a community of innovators and changemakers, connecting teams with ongoing mentorship, resources, and educational activities in conjunction with challenge partners

How it Works:

  • Your contribution to the virtual hackathon can take the form of participant, mentor, judge, or partner organization.

  • Teams will form on Friday, October 16th. Throughout the weekend, teams will hone in on key problem statements and generate tangible and executable solutions, including proof of concepts, prototypes, and preliminary vision for execution.

  • On Sunday, October 18th, teams will reconvene to pitch their solution before a panel of expert judges. After the weekend, the best ideas and teams will have the opportunity to co-develop and implement their solution with the support of our partners.

For more information and to apply, please check out our website. The application deadline is October 13th at 11:59 PM ET.
