Abstract: Heera Lee’s teaching style has been influenced by her experiences teaching in a range of environments, including at the middle school level, and teaching both at an English Language Institute, and within university settings. In her talk, Heera will describe her educational philosophy. She focuses on three aspects: emotional, social, and interdisciplinary learning. She will highlight the importance of developing a learning environment where students feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them. Additionally, she will describe the importance of facilitating communication and collaboration between students and with the wider community. She will describe how she facilitates interdisciplinary learning, combining areas of computing, psychology, and design. Heera’s dissertation research focuses on ways to support language instruction, with a view to aid emotional scaffolding for students.

Bio: Heera Lee (she/her) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Human-Centered Computing program at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is advised by Dr. Ravi Kuber and Dr. Jiaqi Gong. She is currently an adjunct instructor at Towson University, where she teaches Human-Computer Interaction. She holds an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and M.S. in Human-Centered Computing (HCC), and a B.A. in Chinese Studies with a minor in Education.
