Speaker: David Loshin, University of Maryland, College of Information Studies

Data governance is increasingly focused on managing auditable compliance with externally defined laws, regulations, and standards, yet conventional approaches to data governance focusing on operating models and org charts are insufficient to satisfy this need.

In this session we introduce key aspects of understanding how to translate legal and compliance directives into data protection policies for guarding against unauthorized use of protected sensitive information. The talk explores identifying and defining policies and how different types of data policies are managed as part of a data governance program. We then provide an overview of ways of using taxonomies for data asset classification as well as clarifying data consumer roles and data privileges.

Attendees will learn about:

  • Goals of data protection policy governance
  • Data policy basics: What is a data policy, and translating directives into data policies
  • Developing taxonomies for data asset, role, and use context description, categorization, and classification
  • Processes for bridging the gaps between the data owners, IT, and data consumers.
