Data and its Application in a Streaming Media Company

Speaker: David Landy, Content Data Scientist at Netflix

Headshot of David Landy, Content Data Scientist at Netflix

David Landy

David Landy will discuss how data is used at a streaming media company (in David’s case, Netflix) to shape the future of content. David will present a broad overview of how streaming data is distinct from other high-data businesses (such as gaming). The primary focus of this talk will be on the interplay between understanding user behavior with models, the challenges of translating those models into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders, and the ethical questions around working with large, private data sets about individual taste preferences, with several examples drawn from practical issues in applying data to understanding the impact of series and films on members. David will also highlight roles that different perspectives (such as economics or psychology, or varied life experiences) can play in improving data science.

David Landy received their Ph.D. in Cognitive Science and Computer Science in 2007 and was a professor of Psychology for 10 years at the University of Richmond and Indiana University. David specialized in human ways that problem-solving in mathematics leveraged visual and spatial systems. in 2018, David moved to industry and took a position as a Senior Data Scientist at Netflix, focusing on product innovation experimentation. In 2020, they moved to content data scientist, and currently focusing on interpretable psychological models of member taste.
