Naeemul Hassan, Assistant Professor at the iSchool and UMD College of Journalism, is driven by research on big data, databases and data mining. Prior to joining the iSchool in the Fall of 2019, he was an Assistant Professor in the Computer and Information Science Department at the University of Mississippi. Currently, Naeemul is focused on computational journalism and social sensing, working on a number of projects with faculty and staff from the UMD Computational Journalism Lab. A few of his most recent research endeavors include the BaitBuster project, which aims to develop techniques to detect various forms of clickbait, especially video-based clickbait, and design effective warning systems based on user behavior studies, ClaimViz, an initiative to analyze the requirements of fact checkers and develop a case study around how the ClaimViz visual analytic system can help users spot and verify information, and a case study in social media sensing and the “MeToo” movement where he and his research team analyzed about 40,000 tweets which used the hashtag, “#WhyIDidntReport,” to understand and categorize people’s reasons for not reporting their sexual violence experiences. Naeemul has plans in the works to further increase collaboration efforts between the iSchool and School of Journalism and other UMD departments. In his free time outside of the iSchool, Naeemul enjoys spending quality time with his family.
