BS in Information Science + Master of Information Management

With the combined BS in Information Science + Master of Information Management (BSIS + MIM) program, BSIS students get a head start on their masters degree. You will:

  • Gain the advanced skills employers value
  • Make valuable connections
  • Save money
  • Complete two STEM degrees in only five years

If you are a UMD College Park BSIS student with 45 or fewer credits you can apply in the Fall of your sophomore year and, if accepted, enroll in graduate-level MIM courses in your junior and senior years that fulfill requirements for both programs.

BS Information Science + MIM (BSIS + MIM) Program Description

In the accelerated BSIS + MIM program you will learn to design solutions, create systems and lead teams that bring together information, technology and people for good. You will learn the latest analytical, technical, and leadership skills to deliver actionable insights, manage cybersecurity and information risks, oversee information assets, understand ethical considerations, and become information industry leaders. You can choose to focus on Data Science & Analytics, Cybersecurity & Risk Management, or create a custom focus.

Students graduate in five years with both a Bachelor of Science in Information Science degree and a Master of Information Management degree.

The program prepares graduates to be technically savvy, socially skilled, and ethically grounded  information professionals, ready for careers:

  • In jobs such as Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Product Manager, Data Consultant, Business Analyst, Information Assurance Manager, Risk Management Consultant, Cybersecurity Specialist
  • At top organizations such as Accenture, Adobe, Amazon, Bloomberg, BlueCrossBlueShield, Capital One,  Deloitte, Disney, Google, Honda, IBM, IRS, J.P. Morgan Chase, Library of Congress, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Salesforce, US Department of Defense, Washington Post, and The World Bank.
Tracks and Focus Areas

BSIS + MIM students may choose to focus on a MIM track, but would not do a BSIS specialization (cognate area). The tracks are:

  • Cybersecurity and Risk Management: You will gain the skills needed to identify vulnerabilities and manage risks to neutralize potential threats to networked systems, data, and users.
  • Data Science and Analytics: You will gain skills in machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), building pipelines, using predictive analytics, visualizing data, and using big data infrastructures and tools to implement scalable analytics solutions and create meaningful insights that drive decision making.
  • Flexible Individual Program Plan: You will be able to tailor your plan of study to align with your specific career goals.
Overlap Courses

Students admitted into the BSIS + MIM combined program usually* take:

  • Software Development Environments instead of an Upper-Level Major Elective
  • Management of Information Services instead of INST352 Information User Needs and Assessment**
  • Information Environments instead of INST335 Organizations, Management, and Teamwork**

*Courses may vary so work with an advisor to develop your program plan.
**Students interested in the BSIS + MIM should not take INST352 or INST335 before applying.

Tuition

BSIS + MIM students save money because they complete both degrees with 9 fewer credits. However, you will pay undergraduate tuition and fees PLUS graduate tuition and fees for each graduate credit (which includes a $50 p/credit INFO College fee).

BSIS + MIM students will receive priority for Undergraduate Course Aide positions. These provide excellent preparation for later graduate teaching assistant positions, some of which may cover tuition.
